To Join or Not to Join?

stillbeingmolly
Remember how I told you all that I sometimes am not extremely happy with my body?

Well, lately, I've really been feeling like a slug; I was sick for a while and wasn't able to run/work out and there was a lot of food around after the loss of my husband's grandmother so I didn't really stick to my clean/whole/natural/healthy food plan.

I'm sure all of that has something to do with it, but since then I've jumped back on my bandwagon of running, working out, eating healthier, and setting goals.  And I have been doing some contemplating...pruning if you will.

I'm trying to rid myself of bad and immerse myself in good.  Let's be honest, there isn't really anything negative about making healthy choices.  So, I find myself contemplating a gym membership.

This is a tough decision for me!  Let me explain:
1. I love to run.  I love to run outdoors.  I'm not much of a treadmill girl.  However, in the event of a thunderstorm, a treadmill would be nice.
2. I teach a workout class for free 1 night a week at my church.  Yes, I teach it.  Which makes me question why I need a gym membership if I'm able to teach an aerobic class?!  Perhaps that is a pride thing.
3. I now carpool and would have to join the gym in my town in order to continue carpooling.  I'm not knocking the gym - I live in a small area, we aren't going to have a Nautilus - but it's hard for me to justify paying the same fee for a few pieces of equipment that I was paying for all the glory of classes, an indoor pool, racquet ball courts, and nautilus machines.

Any thoughts on this?  I understand this is a minor decision, but for some reason I'm really struggling with it.  Don't ask me why - I'm female??

  1. I know some people love the gym, but these days I'm all about NOT going to the gym. Like you, I love to run outside and feel that there's something I get from it that I could not get from a treadmill (in terms of the mental benefits of exercise – it's such a good zone-out for me to run outside). I joined a gym my first year out of college when I lived in DC and it became such a drag – I forced myself to go every day after work, and I got to the point where I didn't enjoy it at all – and that was no good.
I like to mix up running outside with a yoga class or two every week – provides a nice balance.

  2. I have a gym membership but I never use it! It's a complete waste of money for me and I wish I never signed up for it. I was blinded by all the 'perks' that comes with it but again perks I never use. I'm looking forward to my contract being up in a few months.

  3. I love classes because I'm stuck there until I finish but on the whole I never get my money's worth from a membership because I don't go enough. Now I have a concession card so I only pay for actual things I go to (which is good because I haven't been forever!!)
