Biffles and Memories

You know those friends you have that are just always there?

Like, no matter how much time, distance, or life has gone by, you just pick up where you left off and laugh til your belly hurts, tears stream down your face, and everything is as it always was?

Last weekend really was epic.  I mean, I saw my parents and I got together with girlfriends I haven't seen in real life in 3+ years!

One of my best friends got married last weekend and since mom and dad were in town, we just drove back for the ceremony, hung out for a few minutes and then drove back to the campground.
I'm so glad we did.

Seeing these girls was worth every hour in the car.  Not to mention, seeing my girlfriend so incredibly, genuinely happy was the best.

Our babies are almost exactly 2 months apart.
Friends like these and weekends like that really are what life is all about.  So blessed.

P.S. Happy Halloween!

The Middle of Nowhere

Sweater: Burke's Outlet (similar, similar), Jeans: Old Navy Maternity, Boots: Steve Madden (similar)

I was on my way to have brunch with a girlfriend one Saturday and I had brought my tripod and camera thinking there might be a cute place nearby to take some pictures.  As I was driving, I rode right by this old building with this message on it.  It literally made me stop in my tracks, turn around, and come back to take pictures.  I couldn't resist.

What a great place to take some outfit photos?!  Right, smack dab, in the middle of nowhere.

P.S. Non-maternity sweaters make great maternity staples because they so quickly gather back their shape when washed appropriately.  Keep that in your pocket for a preggo day.

The best kind of weekend.

"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."
A.A. Milne

That quote explains exactly how I feel right now to a "T."  Couldn't have said it better myself.

Sweater: H&M, Jeans: Old Navy Maternity, Shoes: Steve Madden, Necklace: Premier, Bracelets: Forever 21
It's difficult to really express the weekend I just had.  If you get to see your family on a consistent basis, you may think I'm a total freak for thinking I had the best weekend when I did a whole lot of nothing, but got to do it with the people I love most.

Prior to last Tuesday I hadn't seen my parents since July.  That's a long time!  Especially when one is incubating a baby...there is a lot of growth in those months!

Last Tuesday I got a wild hair and despite promising myself I wouldn't miss a day of school before baby, I decided to leave at 3:00 and head to VA to spend the night with mom and dad.  I found someone to cover my late bus duty, our ball game was cancelled so I didn't have ball game duty, and I took the next day off work.  It was worth every second of vacation time I used.

We literally did a whole lot of nothing on Wednesday, but we did it together.

We ate a big breakfast, scoped out Goodwill, and went through 2 huge garbage bags full of baby clothes mom purchased for Baby G!  They are adorable.  He is so spoiled already.  Obviously mom has the same thrifting gene I do - wonder where I got that from!

Over the weekend, hubby and I went back up to spend the weekend with them at the campground and we did a lot of sitting around the campfire, laughing, and making new memories together.

It was a bombDOTcom weekend.

Maternity Shoot Suggestions from YOU

So, I've already started thinking about what I would like to wear for our maternity shoot next month and I keep going back to skinny jeans, boots, and a cardigan for the less formal pictures.

It's fall - it's one of my favorite outfits preggo or not and I just like the whole look of it.

However, I really want to have a special cardigan to wear for the shoot to make it feel extra special so I've started searching around online for what I have in mind.  I've found 5 options that I really like, but now I'm struggling to narrow it down.  This is where you come in!

cardigan maternity shoot

My favorites are #1 and #2.

#1 has a more feminine and dressy feel and #2 is more comfy, cozy and warm.  I'm planning to wear jeans and brown boots and the shirt will depend on which cardigan I purchase.

I'm sure I'll be inquiring in the near future about what I should wear for the formal part, too.  I guess I should also share that our maternity shoot will *hopefully* be in a vintage, handmade toy store since you know...that's me.

Which one is your favorite?

28 Weeks

How Far Along: Last Saturday marked 28 weeks

Size of Baby: Approx 3 pounds

Weight Gain: 26 lbs

Stretch Marks: Nope!

Maternity Clothes:  Loving them.  Found a great maternity sweater for $2 at the thrift store last Thursday.

Gender:  Sweet baby boy!

Movement:  I literally feel our baby boy all. day. long.  And I love it!

Sleep: Sleeping well, but I am a living heater in the bedroom!  I am sleeping with no blankets on and the fan blowing on me - my poor husband is shivering!  I can't help it.

Missing:  My brother.  Mom and dad are here this week and it has been oh-so-special.  I just wish Brother Bear were here to make it complete.  I am such a family person and my brother is my bff.

Loving:    Salads.  I typically would not put ranch on them, but I'm loving ranch and croutons!  Loving that my mother inlaw hung onto a lot of my husband's baby things so we can use them for our boy and incorporate them into his nursery.

Craving:   Celery with peanut butter, Macintosh apples, squash - mom made some Weds night for dinner and brought me 4 from home - now all I can think about is squash.  So yummy!

Feeling: Great!  Still running and staying energized.  Definitely slowing down my runs as I'm starting to feel a little wear and tear on my body when I go too far or too hard.  I'm realizing that my post-pregnancy body will not be able to function properly if I don't take care of my pregnancy body right now.  So, I've decided to start using the elliptical and walking when necessary.

Looking Forward: To going home for Thanksgiving.  Now that I've seen my parents, I'm even more excited about seeing the rest of them when I go home.  Also my best friend from high school and my mom are throwing me a shower while I'm home so I'm really excited for that.

Best Moment(s):   Watching my mom and dad hear baby boy's heartbeat for the first time.  That was mom's birthday present!  I rented a heart monitor from Baby Beat for my mom's birthday present and it was the best idea I could have come up with!  I video taped her reaction as she opened it, but promised I wouldn't share the video.  I also got to spend the night with my parents Tuesday night and took the day off Wednesday so we could  just hang out and be a family.  It was totally worth a vacation day.

Mom made the most delish meal Wednesday night: squash, mashed potatoes, and pork tenderloin.

Went for a nice 3 mile walk this week and walked several more miles throughout the week.
Taking care of my body and not pushing myself too far physically.
28/ 48 miles in October with Manda

A few of my favorite former students (I have lots of favorites) send me special pictures from spirit week each year now that they are in high school.  I teach some awesome kids.

A little slice of pink sheds light

Scarf: gift, Tee: Liz Lange for Target, Skirt: Liz Lange for Target, Bracelet: Groopdealz

I'm a red head so I don't own a lot of pink and now that I'm pregnant, I definitely lack pink in my wardrobe so when we were asked to wear pink to show breast cancer awareness at work last week I had to search my closet.

Luckily I'd been gifted this pretty scarf a few years ago by a coworker as part of our Secret Santa exchange.  Throughout the day a lot of my students were asking me where my pink was and they were unsatisfied with the little bit I had on.

Truth is, there are a lot of colors like pink that I'm lacking in my wardrobe.  Until recently (a.k.a until I started blogging) I was really conservative and careful with my wardrobe.  Primarily because I was unsure of what people would say if I went too bold or bright.

It's funny to me now when I look in my closet that at one point people teased me for the amount of black I wore or the fact that I was strictly neutrals only.  Now, when you look in my closet, it is flooded with prints, brights, vibrant hues, and even trends!  I've always loved clothes; always admired fashion and always had an eye for it, but now I find myself venturing out and trying those things I admire.

Printed pants, neon accents, faux leather trim, and booties to name a few.  Fashion is so fun!  It is all about you and who really cares what other people have to say about it?!

How many ways can you wear the same dress?

Scarf:  me, Dress: Motherhood Maternity(similar), Boots: Steve Madden (similar), Bracelets: Forever 21
If you're lucky, when you're pregnant you'll find a few staple pieces to add to your wardrobe that can be worn so many different ways so you never feel "blah" about your look.

This dress.  It takes the "blah" out of my maternity closet.

This dress has become one of my favorite maternity pieces.  It's so versatile.  And I scored it for $4 at a consignment sale way back when I thought my belly would never be big enough to fill it out.  Oh how funny that was!

Some things that make this dress awesome:
  • the color; I can literally pair it with anything because of the grey color
  • dress up or down: Pair it with boots and a scarf to dress it down or tights and a statement necklace for a nicer occasion
  • sleeves: It has sleeves (layering make me way hot right now), but they can easily be pushed up above my elbow so that I am cooler
  • length: Perfection.
  • comfort: It's jersey knit which is stretchy and breathable and heavenly (esp when preggo)
I've worn this dress so many different ways already and I have many more ideas for future.  Hope you aren't sick of seeing it.  Chances are I'll figure out a few more ways to wear it in the next 2 months!

This is one of the items I styled for my 7x7 challenge.  (to see how I styled it click the link) To the naked eye, it may just look like a simple grey jersey knit dress, but to someone with a little imagination - it is a blank canvas!

Reset Button

sometimes you need to take a moment in your life and hit "RESET"
things pile up and weigh on you and it becomes difficult to realize all the good.

sometimes we get so busy with life that we forget to notice all the small awesome things taking place around us.  it's easy to watch the news, read the paper, or listen to coworkers and fall into the crab pot.
you know the one.  here you are making progress, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and then a coworker or colleague or friend or whoever comes up and starts tugging you back.

so we need to reset.  reestablish our goals, realign priorities, revisit old dreams, and remind ourselves of what is truly important.   i urge you, hit your reset button and take off!

once in a while we slip for a day, a week, or more...
and resetting gets us back on track.  i know for me my personal health and eating choices are something i struggle with at times and it's no secret that the past 2-3 weeks i've allowed pregnancy to be an excuse to eat whatever i wanted or craved at that moment.

yes.  i've been very concerned with weight gain.
yes.  i've continued running and exercising (not as much though).
yes.  i'm still making healthy choices.

i've also made a lot of bad choices like 2 bowls of ice cream in one evening or 6 oreos and a cup of milk after every meal.  how about the nights i just put my feet up, let the housework go, never thought twice about a run/walk and watched homeland on demand for hours with my husband?

so, i've hit reset.  i'm starting over this week.
luckily, my 2-3 week rock bottom won't break me and i can get back on track.
so can you.

Rockin' Everywhere!

I found you miss new bootie...

Sorry.  Every time I talk about booties that song jumps into my head and I just want to go back to when it was new and jam out again.

Anyway, I am coveting (in the worst way) a pair of black ankle booties.  I want them to be moto-esque, but not so tough looking.  My real desire is to be able to wear them with maxi dresses/skirts through winter months.  Therefore, I'm looking for something with little to no heel.

You wouldn't believe the time I'm having!  Finding a pair I like and in my budget has been tough.

Here are my options...

black ankle booties

I'm really feeling #3 with the cut outs and slight heel.  Which is your favorite?

27 Weeks

How Far Along: Last Saturday marked 27 weeks

Size of Baby: 2.5 pounds

Weight Gain: 25 lbs; I'm kind of wishing I hadn't decided to share weight gain on this blog.  Not because of my own insecurities - I've dealt with those.  But, mainly because I've found that I'm really concerned with it.  I am weighing myself more now than I ever would have in the past and it's just not healthy in my opinion.  A few truths remain: 1. I'm not overweight, 2. I'm not gaining excessively, and 3. I'm still exercising and maintaining my health so the fact that I have a desire to step on the scale daily or semi-daily is not good.  And totally unnecessary.  However, I wanted to share the weight gain in an attempt to be transparent - now I'm wondering if it really matters...

Stretch Marks: Nope!

Maternity Clothes:  Still wearing quite a few non-maternity pieces, but feeling very comfortable in my maternity staples.  Starting to think about what to wear for our pictures!  I'm definitely going to be looking for your input!

Gender:  Sweet baby boy!

Movement:  Lots more movement lately!  And finally, Sunday evening hubby got to feel him!  His expression was: "Holy cow, that was a strong kick!"  It was awesome. :)

Sleep: Still very touch and go with the sleep.

Missing:  Now that JCrew is having its 50% off sale and Old Navy just had their's, I must admit I am missing being able to shop for fall fashion.  However, I will be able to do that very soon!  I mean, in less than 3 months baby boy will be here.

Loving:    The nursery is painted!  I can finally go purchase fabric and get to work on rest of the decor since I will have a place to hang it all.  I am so excited to share with you some upcoming projects that I have planned for his lil space.  The nursery itself won't be debuted until he is here, but I will definitely share sneak peeks along the way.

Craving:   Hot cocoa with marshmallows

Feeling: Good!  I am starting to experience heart burn and that is not pleasant, but totally manageable.

Looking Forward: Can't wait to see my parents next weekend!!

Best Moment(s):   I can't share the BEST moment right now because it would ruin my mom's birthday surprise (sorry mom!), but in one short week I will be with them and can share it then!
I'm having the hardest, but best time picking out fabric for the nursery!
Some ideas on my style board are above.

Got back into my running routine hard core this week.
Currently at 19/48 miles in October and with Manda

Passed my glucose test!
P.S. This does not taste nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be; take that from someone who doesn't drink soda or juice because it's too sweet.

Thursday Treats

Sweater: Abercrombie via Plato's Closet, Top: GAP maternity via online yard sale, Jeans: Motherhood (gifted)

Thursdays I dress a little more casually for work.  I always waited until Friday to wear jeans and even then I would dress them up with a nice top, cardigan, or dressy shoes.  That day has now turned to Thursdays.  Thursdays make Friday seem a little further away right now so comfort is key.

See, on Thursdays I get to work by 7:15 and I don't get home until about 8:40 p.m.  I teach 95 8th graders all day and then I have about an hour break (in which I typically run on the treadmill at school) before heading to my master's class from 4:00-8:15.  If I'm expected to do all that in one day, I want to be comfortable while I'm doing it.

Since Thursdays can seem so long, sometimes I treat myself to something special as a reward for doing all that in such a short amount of time.  Sometimes I forgo my run and I just...
  • wander around the children's section at thrift store for 30 minutes
  • stop at Sonic for a cherry limeade or caramel sundae
  • read blogs for 30 minutes after school
  • window shop online
What do you treat yourself with?

Some trends never say die

So, last week I shared my love of plaid with you all and made you promise never to tell me ever if it goes out of style.

Something else I've always loved are a great pair of cargo pants.  I must admit, cargo pants on men or on shorts - not my thing.  (Sorry!)  But, a pair of khaki or army green cargo pants on a female?

I likey.  I mean, this girl rocks her cargo pants and has for decades so who can argue that they have a short lifespan?  Or any lifespan for that matter?  Pretty much, in my opinion, Jennifer Aniston can do no wrong when it comes to style so if she can do it, I can, too!

Chambray: Old Navy, Tee: Liz Lange for Target, Cargos: Gap Maternity (old)
Necklace: thrifted, Bracelets: Forever 21(similar)
I'm trying real hard to look cute and be comfy at the same time, particularly at work.  Cargo pants are the quintessential pant for that!

One thing I'm really missing out on being that I'm preggo in the fall is all the new fashion and style coming out this season, but with these cargo pants and my chambray left unbuttoned, I still feel like I can be in on some of that fall fashion goodness.

Do you have a favorite trend that you never let die?

Thrifted Corduroy

Scarf: Gift, Top: Liz Lange for Target, Pants: Old Navy Maternity (thrifted)

I've always been a fan of corduroy.  Especially corduroy in browns.
I've also always been a big fan of thrifting, upcycling, and yard saling. (Thanks mom!)

So, when you walk into a thrift store and all women's tops and pants (including maternity) are $2 each and you find Old Navy brown maternity corduroys, it's a no brainer.  They go in your cart and come home with you.  Macklemore would be so proud.

Pair those $2 pants with a few other items and you have an entire maternity outfit for <$20?!  Amazing.

I realize this outfit may be a bit frumpy because the pants are slightly big on me.  Fact of the matter is, they are comfortable and I will grow into them in the next 3 months.  Therefore, I'm not going to do a thing to change them.  I had thought about taking them in, but negative!

What great deals have you scooped up lately?
