Sweaty Bands Review and Giveaway!!

Ladies, I have found the solution to your workout hair woes!  
You know what I'm talking about.  The bangs in your eyes, the strays sticking to your sweaty forehead, the hair band constantly sliding off the back of your head.  Really, I wish these things would have been around when I was playing sports all through high school and college.  I'm talking about Sweaty Bands.  They are the most genius headbands!  Not only are they cute, but they have velvet on the underside preventing them from slipping off your head.

I have worn these walking the dogs, running, doing yoga, and to water aerobics in the last week.  Not once did I feel the need to readjust or check to make sure it was still in place.  The best part: my hair was out of my face the entire time!  You know what I did in college?  I would roll up pre-wrap and tie it around my head - this would have been so much more cute and economical!

Celebrate EVERYTHING: First Link-Up!

It's here!  It's finally here!!
July is my Blogiversary month.
I've seen fabulous giveaways and wonderful collaborations done to celebrate blogiversaries on other blogs and I've always really enjoyed partaking in them and reading about how/why bloggers got started doing what they do, but I wanted to do something different.

So, rather than doing a one-time giveaway, I came up with an idea to celebrate every single month of the year!  And I don't want to be the only one celebrating.  I want each of you to be able to celebrate as well.  Therefore, the CelebrateEVERYTHING link-up has been born.

The best thing I did this month (other than hearing my baby's heartbeat) is spending 3.5 weeks with my parents and family in the Adirondacks.  It started with 1 week in Myrtle Beach with my hubby and parents.  Then I hopped in the car with mom and dad and drove the 14+ hours from NC to upstate NY. It was a long ride, but it's always worth it.  Just look at this view.  Literally, out my front window.

While there, I got to see family and friends I haven't seen since Christmas.  I got to show off my growing baby bump.  I hiked mountains and ran along the lake which trumps any run I've done in NC #sorrynotsorry.  I celebrated my 10 year high school reunion.  I got to see friends that have been deployed for the last year.  I went camping and got to go to another NASCAR race I had never been to before (seeing the Global Rally Cross was pretty awesome.) 

It was one of those trips that you never want to end.  The only thing was, my hubby and dogs weren't with me.  So, in the end, I was ready to get on a plane and arrive back in Greensboro to be embraced and licked to death.  (Hubby didn't do the licking!)

The day after I got home, I got to hear the baby's heartbeat again and I felt it fluttering inside me for the first time!  I'm telling you, it's magic.  Pure magic.  I can't wait for my hubby to be able to feel the little one moving as well.  We celebrated by going to a new restaurant and hitting up The Comedy Zone.

To say July was great is an understatement.  I have a feeling it only gets better from here.

16 weeks

How Far Along: 16 weeks as of Saturday!

Size of Baby: Turnip, 5 inches, 5 oz.

Weight Gain: 6 pounds - Dr. says I'm right on track.  Feeling good about that.  If I'm being totally honest the weight gain scares me - not so much the gain, the loss afterward.

Stretch Marks: Not yet *fingers crossed*

Maternity Clothes:  I'm wearing maternity shorts in these pictures.  I can still wear normal clothes, but my belly pushes them down unless I wear a belly band.  I don't mind a belly band, but it's more comfortable to wear maternity in the heat.

Gender:  We find out August 20th!!

Movement:  I've felt a few tickles since my appointment last week.

Sleep:  Not consistent.  I'm waking up often.  Luckily I've been able to nap quite a bit.

Missing:  Sleeping on my belly and my right side. 

Loving:  The stuff I got at a kids consignment sale at the state fairgrounds!  Yay for a jogging stroller for a fraction of the price!

Craving:  Still drinking lots of water.  Also loving fresh fruit: cherries, watermelon, pineapple, bananas, and apples.

Feeling: Excited.

Looking Forward: Excited to learn more about my new DSLR - you can see the product of my first experimentation with it below.  Also looking forward to cooler weather this week and pay day!

Best Moment(s): Date night with my hubby at an amazing Italian restaurant (Giovanni's) and The Comedy Zone. 


I learned a valuable lesson during these pictures about time of day and sunlight - this clearly is not the right time of day for picture taking.

15 Weeks

*Okay, I'm super late with my 15 week bumpdate.  Forgive me.  I promise to be back on track
now that my traveling has come to an end.  I figure better late than never!*




How Far Along: 15 weeks. 

Size of Baby: Avocado, 3-5 oz.

Weight Gain: 4.5 pounds

Stretch Marks: Not yet *fingers crossed*

Maternity Clothes:  There are still many pieces in my wardrobe that I can wear, but I have started opting to wear maternity clothes.  They are just more comfortable and more flattering.  The panel helps support everything.

Gender:  We find out August 20th!!

Movement:  I was sitting outside Moe's after my appointment this week and I kept scratching my stomach because it tickled.  After a few times, I realized the tickling didn't stop!  It was coming from the inside out!  So, I think I've felt the baby fluttering around in there.  Amazing-ness.

Sleep:  Waking up a few times to use the restroom, but falling right back asleep.

Missing:  Sushi.  I want sushi so bad.  Hubby, if you're reading this, let's go order every cooked roll on the menu.

Loving:   My new DSLR!  Hubby surprised me and ordered it early as my push present.  Can't wait to finally have great photos for my blog and future ones of our family!

Craving:  Lots of water and salads!  Finally, my aversion to salads is gone and I'm loving them.

Feeling: Awesome.  

Looking Forward: We find out the baby's sex on August 20th!  I'm so excited for that.  Also, looking forward to attending a consignment sale with my friend and her mom for baby gear!

Best Moment(s): Hearing baby's heartbeat again this week.  Dr. says it sounds perfect! (I think so, too. :o)

Hiking Essentials


While home I went on several hikes as an alternative to running and to see some of the beautiful sights that the Adirondack mountains have to offer.  Over the years and through trial and error, I learned what needs to be packed and needs to be left home on a hike while pregnant (or anytime).


  1. Water.  This is most important.  Depending on the length of the hike, you will want to pack accordingly.  I would average about 1 bottle of water per hour just to keep hydrated.  Of course, hydrate before and after the hike as well.
  2. Nutritious snacks: apples, nuts, trail mix, peanut butter.  The longer the hike, the more you need to pack.  The last thing you want to do is get low on energy or have your sugar drop mid-hike.
  3. Bug spray.  Some people say not to use normal bug spray when you are pregnant, so I use Skin So Soft by Avon right now, but it is essential.  My first hike I was eaten alive by mosquitos and every minute we were hiking was miserable!  Spray, spray, and over spray before going and throughout the hike!
  4. Cooling towel.  If you don't own one of these, we actually make them for the races and they work really well.  We just get them wet and freeze them over night in a zip-lock bag.  Soak it in cold water before going for the hike and keep it on your head or around your neck while you are out.  They help maintain a stable body temperature and are useful in wiping off sweat.
  5. Sunscreen.  I know when hiking you spend the majority of your time under trees and in wooded areas, but if you're going to be outside, you should always have sunscreen especially on your face.  During pregnancy, some women burn much easier than normal so this is even more important during that time.  Don't forget to reapply because of sweat.
  6. Extra socks.  If you're intending to hike for an extended distance or period of time, you may want to bring extra socks.  Once socks are wet, feet tend to blister so changing them at the peak might prevent that from happening.

H54F


Yay for another awesome week at home!  I'm so enjoying my time here and especially my time with family, friends, and the beauty that is the Adirondacks!

1. Seeing Travis Pastrana race the Global Rally Cross race was awesome!  I'd never been to a race like this and absolutely loved the jumps and obstacles.  Pastrana is one of my favorites because he is such a daredevil.  I follow him and his wife on Instagram.  (Her name is Lynz and she is pregnant, too!)

2.  Hiking with my best friend from high school.  Everyone always told us we would grow up, grow apart, and not be friends forever.  They were wrong!  I love this girl just as much as I did 10 years ago. We grew up, moved apart, and will be friends forever!

3.  Hanging with mom and just being silly together.  We photobombed ourselves with our Geico fans while waiting for the race to start because....why not?

4.  Running along the water.  Running at home isn't going to be the same.

5.  Being surprised by my brother at the race!  My dad, my brother, and a NASCAR rep worked together to hide this from my mom and me and I couldn't have been more surprised or happy.  I love a good surprise and this was above and beyond.  I didn't think I would get to see him while I was home because he lives pretty far away and had to work.  So glad I did.

Solutions to Excuses


I recently read this great post on 25 reasons why people should run.  I agree with so many of them.
Some of my favorites:

  • because you will build muscles you didn't know you had
  • you will go farther than you ever thought possible
  • because crossing the finish line for the first time will be a memory you will never forget
  • because it's time your sports bra was actually used for sports
  • because no other sport gives you bling at the end
I can think of a plethora of reasons why you should run.  And it's interesting to me how many people can come up with an equal amount of reasons why they shouldn't/can't run.  I've told you before, running isn't the only form of exercise I do.  I switch things up consistently, but just for the fun of it, I thought I would share some excuses reasons why people have told me they can't run and my solution to those excuses reasons.
  • I just can't. (What about this seems legit even coming out of your mouth?)
  • I tried once.  I just can't breath after the first few minutes so I have to stop. (Why don't you try slowing down as opposed to stopping?  Or traveling less distance?  How about training yourself to breath correctly and building your way up?)
  • I'm just not built for that. (Have you ever been to a race?!  There are people of all sizes, colors, shapes, and weights running.  I used to think there was a "runner's body" - there isn't.)
  • I don't like to sweat. (You know something, sweating isn't my favorite either, but it beats dying or having a gut any day so I'll take it.)
  • I just don't enjoy it. (Your parents said this and you hated them for it.  Now you can hate me.  Nothing worth doing is going to come easy and not everything in life is going to be pleasurable.)
  • I don't have time.  (This excuse holds no warrant with me.  I have SO many solutions to this one: 1. Make time. 2.  Wake up early in the morning.  3.  Go to bed an hour later at night.  4.  Give up a tv show.  5.  Run around the field while your child is at baseball practice/ballet/swimming.)
  • I don't know how you do it.  I'm so tired; I just don't have the energy at the end of the day. (Want to know why I'm not tired and I have the energy?  Because I run!  It gives you the energy you need.  Try it!)
I could go on forever.  I will spare you.  Just remember, being a runner doesn't mean you win races or even compete in them.  It means, you hit the pavement a few times a week and you do it.  It's not about how fast your pace is, how long you go, how far you go, or how often...just do it.

14 weeks


How Far Along: 14 weeks.  Second trimester!

Size of Baby: Lemon

Weight Gain: 2 pounds

Stretch Marks: Nope!

Maternity Clothes:  Since I'm traveling I am very limited on what I have to wear because I left home at 11 weeks and I will return at 15!  That's a lot of growth from a carry-on suitcase!  I've been so blessed with amazing friends that have lended me maternity clothes and wonderful friends who have given me maternity clothes they no longer need.  Maternity clothes are expensive!  

Gender:  Not sure and we have an exciting way to announce that! (To be continued...)

Movement:  Not yet

Sleep:  Waking up a few times to use the restroom, but falling right back asleep.

Missing:  My husband and dogs.  I've been away from them now for a week and a half.  

Loving:   Getting to see my family and talk about baby stuff with them.  

Craving:  Lots of water.  

Feeling: Fantastic and excited about my next appt.

Looking Forward: To my dr. appt. on the 24th and going with my friend, Leslie, to a childrens' consignment sale on the 26th.

Best Moment(s): Getting mistaken as a 16 year old - 28 years old and 3.5 months pregnant, that's pretty good!  Seeing my family and their small children that I haven't seen in a while.

Sentimental-ism


Maybe it's the fact that I'm home, around my family, or maybe it has something to do with me becoming a mother.  Whatever it is, I have found that my typical sentimental-ism is even higher than normal.  And already it's alarmingly high.

I find myself wanting to save everything.  I want to savor every moment, every memory, every minute. I want to reminisce and drink in and create new memories.  I just can't get enough.

I'm spending as much quality time as possible doing the things that may not come easy in the next 6 months.  I'm visiting family and friends and taking lots of pictures.  I don't want to forget any of these moments.  I'm afraid they will pass so fast that I won't truly embrace them.

H54F!


What a great week!  So many good things happening it was hard to pick just 5!  

1. Being home.  I am in upstate NY until July 23rd and although I miss my man and our pups, it is just the best pleasure in the world to be home.  I love this place.

2.  The beach with my parents and hubby.  We had a fabulous time sun bathing, boogie boarding, eating crab legs, and just being together.  

3.  Seeing alligators in the wild.  We were walking along the marsh one evening and saw several alligators just chilling in the water.  It was really cool to see them in their element and not in captivity.

4.  Catching up with a great friend.  I had forgotten I hadn't told her we were expecting since she isn't on Facebook so I sent her a text and she is simply the sweetest!

5.  Running in the North Country trumps running in NC any day.  The humidity is so much lower and the views are so much greater.

Fitness Survey

I thought this was a fun link-up to participate in as health and fitness are a major component of my life.
*I'm pregnant so my answers are specialized for this aspect of my life*


1. What did you eat for breakfast?
2 bowls of Trader Joe's shredded wheat cereal with 2% milk

2. How much water do you drink a day?
Even prior to pregnancy, I would drink at least my 8 glasses of water a day.  Now I drink above and beyond those 8 glasses especially before and after a workout.

3. What is your current favorite workout?
I am loving prenatal yoga.  I had enjoyed yoga in the past, but never this much.  It's like every time I hit the mat, I'm communicating with my sweet babe.  And, as always, I'm a huge fan of running.

4. How many calories do you eat a day?
I usually count calories using MyFitnessPal, but since becoming pregnant, I have stopped.  I'm really just eating when I'm hungry and trying not to snack in between unless I truly want/need something.  I'm making very smart choices.

5. What are your favorite healthy snacks?
I am a huge healthy snacker.  I love hummus and pretzels, pita chips, edamame, fruit, celery with peanut butter, and sunflower seeds.  I don't snack on sunflower seeds too often because of the sodium, but they are still yummy!


6. What do you usually eat for lunch?
Before becoming pregnant, I snacked on salads with all sorts of different meats and toppings.  Since salads have become an aversion for me, I've been eating a lot of hummus, veggies, and peanut butter.  

7. What is your favorite body part to strength train?
Arms and legs.  I love weight training.  

8. What is your least favorite body part to strength train?
Abs - I guess I just don't see results quick enough??

9. What are your “bad” food cravings?
Ice cream - especially now that Burger King has 50 cent cones.  Also lemonade - it's high in sugar.  

10. Do you take vitamins or supplements?
I'm taking prenatal vitamins and Folic Acid.  I've never been one to take supplements.  I did use Gu in my last half marathon and saw a decrease in my time - not sure if that is a credit for the Gu or my training. 

11. How often do you eat out?
Typically, not often at all.  Maybe once a week.

12. Do you eat fast food?
Rarely, but when I do I love Chic-a-filet.

13. Who is your biggest supporter?
My husband.  He comes to all my races, tries new foods with me, and makes time for me to get out and run.  

14. Do you have a gym membership?
I don't have a membership, but my principal set up a gym for us at our school and I use that regularly.  I do have a membership to the yoga studio.

15. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
At least 8.  Now leaning more toward 9-10.

16. Do you have a “cheat” day?
I don't give myself a particular "cheat" day, but I go by the 80/20 rule.

17. Do you drink alcohol?
Sometimes.  I try not to over-indulge.  (Obviously now not at all.)  I don't bounce back well from it and it's just not worth it to me.  I love a good glass of Lambrusco though.

18. Do you have a workout buddy?
Not really.  I love the peace and solace that comes from a good workout.

19. What is the best thing that has changed about your life since committing to a healthy lifestyle?
I have more energy and I sleep so much better at night.  I feel better about myself and just generally love life.

20. What was the last healthy thing you did?
The day before yesterday, I ran 3 miles and yesterday I walked a mile with my mother.

First Trimester

P.S. It amazes me how sometimes my bump looks so much bigger than others!


My husband and I decided to start trying for a baby after the New Year.  We assumed it would take anywhere from 6 months to a year to get pregnant and we were ready to add to our family and so excited about this parenthood journey.  Little did we realize how quickly God would bless us with our little angel.  I didn't find out until May because I was really not anticipating it happening so quickly for us that we are expecting January 11, 2014.

Considering I didn't even realize I was pregnant until about 6-7 weeks, I'm going under the assumption that I have had a very pleasant pregnancy.  From 7-10 weeks, I battled slight morning sickness from about 2pm-7pm.  In fact, this was a big indicator that I was pregnant and motivated me to take a home test.  Other than that, I never got physically sick.  It was a very brief period of time for a lifetime of happiness and I think it would be worth every moment of illness in the long run.

I will admit I had a few stressful moments after realizing I was pregnant because I had had x-rays done at the dentist, had a few glasses of wine with my grandparents when they visited, and indulged in a few adult beverages in celebrating my friends' father's health.  Now, all of those things were minor and did not involve over-indulgence, therefore they are non-stressors to my doctor.  I was so relieved to hear that when I had my first visit!

I've had some food aversions throughout my first trimester, but they are starting to disappear thankfully.  There was no way I was going to put salad, grilled chicken, or pork anywhere near my mouth.  Smelling it was bad enough!

As I said before, pregnancy has been an absolute dream and I am enjoying every single moment!

13 Weeks


How Far Along: 13 weeks!

Size of Baby: Lemon

Weight Gain: only 1 pound so far!  But I'm bracing myself.

Stretch Marks: Not yet and I'm already keeping very moisturized in an effort to avoid them.

Maternity Clothes:  Not quite yet.  I'm using a BeBand with some of my pants that are too snug to button now, but the majority of my shorts are low rise so they are still fitting comfortably.

Gender:  Not sure and we have an exciting way to announce that! (To be continued...)

Movement:  I'm not feeling any movement inside, but I'm moving a lot!  I'm taking prenatal yoga and continuing to run as much as possible.

Sleep:  Waking up several times throughout the night and requiring more sleep than normal, but sleeping soundly all the same.

Missing:  Subs.  I'm home and we have the best subs here and I can't eat them!  I know, I know...I could have them heat the meat, but that just sounds gross to me.

Loving:  My bump!  I'm finally starting to look like I'm pregnant, not just over-indulging!  

Craving:  Lemon and vinegar anything.  Adding lemon juice to my water and pouring vinegar on my French Fries.  Also loving raw fruit and vegetables - pears, watermelon, carrots, apples.

Feeling: Normal!  Now that I'm over morning sickness and able to continue exercising I forget that I'm even pregnant.  

Looking Forward: Relishing every moment.  I know this is going to by way too quickly and I am thoroughly embracing and drinking in every single moment, memory, and milestone throughout these 9 months.  I am 100% in love with being pregnant.  It is such a  miracle.  Also excited that this is my last week in my first trimester!

Best Moment(s): Sending my husband a picture (we are away from each other for 2 weeks) and having him exclaim, "Did you stuff a pillow under your shirt?!"; seeing my family this week and just being home in the North Country - there is nothing quite like it.

Something New


Since becoming pregnant I've been trying new workouts that will benefit me throughout pregnancy and labor.  I had done yoga before, but never really felt like I understood it or "got it" if that makes sense. I have learned so much.  The instructor stops to explain variations of the moves, benefits of the moves, and potential injuries if done incorrectly throughout pregnancy.  It is so informative.

I have to tell you, I may not be a pro, but I am now a self-proclaimed yogi.  I have been doing the moves that I've learned at home and I feel amazing!  The stretching and the strengthening that take place without even breaking a sweat is incredible.

My challenge for you: try something new that is physical.  
Go out and challenge yourself to a new addition in your fitness regimen.
