Fitmom Thoughts

It occurred to me recently that it wasn't very long ago I started to just accept the fact that what everyone had told me about having a baby and getting my body back was true.  I had so many people tell me I would never be able to get my body back or my body would never be the same. 

I remember looking in the mirror a few months ago thinking, "Okay.  I'm okay with this.  I have a beautiful baby that means the entire world to me and I don't mind that things won't be the same."

Then I started with Beachbody and drinking Shakeology every day and that plateau I had hit is now just a memory.  In fact, you can get that body back in a new and improved way - I mean, it nurtured and birthed a child - that's amazing in and of itself!

I still would be okay, but I'm really glad I don't have to be.  I'm really glad that with a little hard work and determination, I can be an example of fitness and health for my family.

Scheduling workouts is hard.  Thank goodness my son loves to run in the stroller with me.  I'm not quite sure it would be as do-able if he didn't.

As women we need to lift each other UP.  Seriously, since starting on this Beachbody journey I have really noticed the amount of women that judge, degrade, or discourage healthy lifestyles.  Aren't we all in this together?  

I have to agree with Marion and assume that some people are disguising envy or even convicted by the posts I'm sharing?

Just so long as you go...

don't quit


The other day I saw that a friend had posted a quote to her Facebook page alluding the fact that it doesn't really matter how far or how fast you go, just so long as you go.

I loved it.  Then I read her caption she wrote to go along with it and I got frustrated.  Not with her, but for her.  I got frustrated for her because someone at some point had commented on the fact that she runs "slow" with "only" a 12 minute pace.  And I wanted to say, at least you're going.

At least you are doing something good for yourself.  Good for your body.  Good for your heart.

So many people don't go at all.  They make excuses or they don't have enough time, money, etc.

Since starting my Beachbody business, I've had people ask me, "Is this something I can do?  You know me.  Be honest."

And I just want to say, "Anybody can!  Everybody should!"

The fact that other people are faster or fitter or learner or stronger does not and should not matter!  I hate that things like this cause us to self-doubt and perhaps even stay put.

Get out there and go.

Moments of the Week

Whew.  It's taken a loooong time to get to Friday this week.  It's been a whirlwind to say the least.

I'm thinking I need to go back to Target and get this hat.  I mean...the cuteness!

We thoroughly enjoyed Talk Like a Pirate Day at Krispy Kreme.

Saturday afternoon we celebrated the beautiful marriage of 2 of our friends.

We napped because we needed it.

And, we discovered how much fun it is to eat (and play) with pasta!

Elephants and Stripes

Since using elephants as part of the theme in my son's nursery, I've had a thing for them.

I'm still kicking myself for not purchasing a beautiful elephant necklace I found at a craft fair this summer with my best friend.  Ho hum...

I'm really wanting this elephant dress, but it says it's sold out.  So I settled a while back on getting an elephant scarf (until I can find the next elephant piece I can't live without.)

I'm also partial to the red,white, and blue color combo.  So when I found this skirt at my local thrift for $2, I knew immediately that I wanted to try my hand at pattern mixing and pair it with my elephant scarf.  I know it's a very safe attempt at pattern mixing, but I like it.

Personal Shopper

The other day I got a message from a coworker asking me about boutiques and shops I frequent because her daughter is looking for something specific for a trip later this fall.  She has a picture in her mind of what she wants, but of course, she can't find it in stores.

Don't you hate that?

It got me thinking about what a luxury it would be to have a personal shopper and how fun it would be to be that personal shopper for other people!  I mean, hello!

Shop all day and get paid for it?  I'm so there.

It also made me think about Stitch Fix and how much I appreciate the service it provides by doing some of the hard digging for me.  It's not often I have time for the dig these days.


Oh!  Ya know what's great about a maxi skirt?  It dresses you up on a day when you want to wear sweats to work, but it feels like sweats.

Ya know what's great about a lace maxi skirt?  It looks even fancier than a normal maxi, but it still feels like sweats.

Fantasy Fitness Challenge


One of the best parts of fall is football.  One of the best things about football is fantasy football.  I love that I can play fantasy football with my friends.  Since we're scattered all over the country, it's nice to have something to compete in that we can all do regardless of where we live.

That is the foundation behind my next challenge group:
No matter where you live or what you do, you can participate in this Fantasy Fitness Challenge because we will "compete" via the internets!  

I am really excited about this challenge group because you can grab a friend, make a team name, and email me to get put on the roster for the challenge!  We will check in periodically to see how your team is doing and you will be supported by others striving to reach their personal fitness goals as well.

Fall Essentials

There are a few things that are "quintessential fall" in my opinion.

I've always been a big fan of vests, but fall (and even winter) in North Carolina just doesn't stack up to the weather I grew up with in the Adirondacks.  So, a vest and cozy sweater is pretty much my go-to outerwear during these months.

Turquoise is my hands down, all time favorite gem stone.  And I'm craving some Kendra Scott.

I have admired felt, floppy hats from afar and I'm thinking this fall is the time to add one to my own wardrobe.  After all, this mama is feeling mighty confident these days so rocking something new is right up my alley.

I will always need another brown leather bag in my life.

In love with the fringe trend this fall and that necklace is exactly how I want to rock it.

Zombie Mommy

Whoa.  This week has been long!  It all started Sunday night when CT decided to party from 11-2:30 a.m. and he pretty much kept the party going all week long.

I hate when he isn't feeling well and between teeth, a runny nose, and a slight cough, he just hasn't had the best week.  Hoping to curb that this weekend and get him at his best again.

In fact, last night was the first night he slept through the night since last Saturday!  This morning he woke up with a smile and a less rosy complexion.

We started the week running our first 5k/race together.

CT hasn't been feeling the best, but that hasn't slowed him down.
I take this as a testament to his inquisitive determination.
Where there's a will, there's a way...

I'm sticking to my healthy eating plan and my Beachbody workouts.
I'm hoping next week will be even better since CT and I will both be feeling 100%.

Not So Normal Recap


Last Sunday CT and I ran our first race together.  It was such a great first race, too.  You know how some races are just better "firsts" than others?  This was one of them.  

 (If you intend to run a first half-marathon I highly recommend the VA Beach Rock-n-Roll half.  For a first 5k any of the color runs are fantastic.)

It wasn't just our first race together.  It was my first race since having a baby, my first race with a stroller, and my first race with a running buddy (who also had baby and stroller!)


Really, the whole weekend was just a great family-centered event.  There were pajama parties, concerts, and lots of fun swag to scoop up before, during, and after the race.  

The entire concept was really fun and the run was through a quaint little Carrboro neighborhood.  So many people were out holding signs and cheering for us - it was a great atmosphere.  CT would hear them cheer and he would yell back at them.  I think he appreciated their support.  

I'm already looking forward to next year.  They are promising even more swag and I know CT will really enjoy the pre-race festivities since he will be a little older.

A dress that looks like fall, but feels like summer

I'm attending a wedding for a darling friend this weekend and it's left me itching for a new dress.  I don't exactly need a new one, but would love one that will look like "fall" and feel like "summer."

If you live in NC (or anywhere in the south) you can totally appreciate my desire for a dress like this.

I started scouring the internets for such a dress and automatically stumbled upon my go-to inexpensive dress shop, Forever 21.  Specifically their Love21 line.

Blank Canvas Wardrobe

If you looked in my closet you would see loads of neutrals: grey, navy, black, etc.  Every now and then I buy a piece with a pop of color or an exciting pattern, but for the most part my wardrobe is full of neutral basics.  

I'm totally fine with this because I love them and when out shopping I still gravitate toward them time and time again.  In fact, my husband will often say, "Don't you have one just like that at home?"

And usually he's right.  Shhhhh, don't tell him I said that.

In fact, this dress came home with me in this color and this one.  I guess he has a point.


I love neutrals because they are like a blank canvas.  I feel like I can do so much with them with the right accessories.  

All it takes is a necklace or a pair of shoes to take this outfit from a blank canvas and into a statement.  The shoes really do the talking here.  Even the statement necklace is a neutral when it comes to this outfit.  The best part is putting this outfit together felt so easy.

9 Months


Dear CT,

You are the sweetest babe.  Seriously, so sweet.  There aren't many moments where you are still or silent these days, but when you are you are the best snuggler.  You are talking up a storm.  Lots of "Da-da," "uh-oh," and the beginnings of "Ma."  

You have 4 teeth now!  4!!  And sometimes if I don't get my finger out of the way in time, I feel all 4 and they are strong.  You've started eating some real food like puffs, yogurt melts, and Ritz crackers.  You're really good at bringing it right to your mouth until you get tired.  Then you just hold it in your hand and stick your thumb in your mouth instead.  It's so cute how you play with the food while your thumb occupies your mouth.  

You are so tall.  You are practically taking up your entire stroller.  And you want to walk and crawl everywhere.  It's almost time to put away the walker and jumper because you hate being confined by them.  I understand - you are very inquisitive.  You love watching out the door as Daddy mows the lawn and we even put a special chair on the front stoop so we can sit out there with you and watch the cars go by in the evenings.  

I am anxiously anticipating your next doctor appointment.  I can't wait to hear about how strong you are.  You are going to be something amazing one day.  I just know it.

9 Month Update
Weight:  20+ pounds (Dr. appt. on the 25th!)
Length:  28+ inches
Nicknames: Milkman, Milk Monster, CT, Hungry Hungry Hippo, Bubby, Monster, Buddy Boy, Stinka, Bubba
Sleep: You generally go to bed around 8:00 and wake up around 5:30 a.m.  The dogs have started waking you up as they race through the house when they hear my alarm go off in the morning.
Eating:  Everything.  You are starting to enjoy puffs and yogurt melts.  You love greek yogurt with some fruit mixed in.  You are drinking out of a sippy cup regularly now and we've started putting your milk in there when you are in your high chair.
Clothing: 6-9 months - quickly moving out of 6 months!
Loves:

  • Playing
  • Your Fisher Price Seahorse
  • Bath time
  • Walks/Runs with Mommy
  • The pool/water
  • Ribbons/shoe laces/strings/etc
  • The dogs!!  (and the dogs' dishes!)
  • Anything you can pull up on - the front door, chairs, your bouncer, etc.
Dislikes:
  • You are starting to dislike your jumper (I think that's because you want to be able to crawl around where you want)
  • Getting lotioned when you are sleepy

You are crawling on your hands and knees now.
You are pulling up on everything - even things you can't grab onto
You started daycare and you love it - you've even made a new best friend, KanyonMomma's Milestones:

My Head is Clogged

This time of year is so weird.  I'm craving all the pumpkin, caramel, layered sweaters, and boots things, but it's still so. hot. out.  Agh!  

Not just that, this weird rainyhotcoldhumid weather that's been happening around these parts has my body confused and now my head is clogged.  Not just with thoughts and to-do lists.  I mean, legit clogged like can't breath through my nose, pounding temple type clogged.

Every year this happens.  This sickness people around here like to call the crud or hay fever.  So I am attempting to fight off a cold without going to the doctor, but I'm still wearing shorts and a tee-shirt because it's too dang hot outside.  

Oh the confusion.

I have the urge to eat soup, drink hot tea, and cuddle up in an oversized sweater underneath a blanket to watch movies next to the fireplace.  I don't know that that will happen any time soon.

Every year when football season comes around it's like this.  It's bad when you think 70 degree weather feels like fall.  But, it does.  So, here I am in my shorts and tee dreaming of the crunchy leaves, pumpkin shakes, and tall boots.


P.S. I promise to (sometime soon) stop writing about how crazy busy and terrible at blogging I am and to have more outfit posts as soon as I can start digging into the favorite part of my wardrobe.

A Leopard Touch

This is that oh-so-versatile dress I was telling you about.  You know the one that I purchased in both colors because I just had to?  That one.

So, let's talk a little about body image, self-confidence, and motherhood.  No worries, I'm not body bashing myself or anybody else.  In fact, it's quite the opposite.  There are definitely some things about my body that are different after baby and there are some things I am working on, but you know how I felt really uninhibited and beautiful during pregnancy?

After pregnancy is pretty much the same.  I mean, I feel like a rockstar.  I birthed a baby, people!

I may not have a six pack (ever again) and I may never fit into the jeans I wore to my engagement pictures, but I feel amazing.  Honestly, I could care less what anyone (except my hubby) thinks - I feel good.  Really good.

I feel confident and sassy and like I've got it going on.  Perhaps its the sleep deprivation talking...


Either way...I would have never worn a fedora or rocked some leopard print sneaks before getting pregnant.  I would have worried about when they were considered appropriate attire and what people would think about leopard on my feet.  (Yes, I realize how stupid this all sounds.)

Now?  Now I just wear what I want, when I want, how I want.  And...it's awesome.

Perhaps you need a fedora and some leopard in your life?  After all, you're a rockstar.

Sticking to Goals

I've been teaching my middle school students about setting attainable goals, creating baby steps to meet those goals, working toward them, and celebrating the end result.  

As I've been doing so I've really started to analyze the parts of my life that I want to work on and the goals that I've set for myself.  I shared some of these goals with my students.  And then the other day when it came time to go out and run for the first time in 2 weeks I thought about that half marathon I've been talking about for the past 6 weeks.  

Confession: I thought about not signing up and just looking for one in the spring.  I started thinking about all the running I hadn't done in the past 2 weeks and felt like it would be impossible to go 8 miles with a stroller after going so long without.

And then I thought about the lesson I am trying to instill in my students.  So many of them have set goals for themselves this year that are going to be hard to attain.  They will have to work toward them every day.  Especially after two weeks off at Christmas.
So, I decided I had to go.  If not for me, then for them.  I have to be the example I want them to be.  I have to work toward my own goals even when I don't want to, even when I hate it, even when it's not fun because that's what they need to do.

I realize this all sounds very melodramatic to those of you who may not have children or work with children, but if they see me doing something (or not doing something) they are more than likely going to mimic that behavior.

So, I went out last Sunday and even though I hadn't run in a long time, I put in 7.5 miles.  (I kicked myself later when I realized had I run another 1/2 mile I would be completely on track with my training.)  Honestly, it wasn't that bad - thinking about it and dreading was far worse than actually doing it.  I think that's the way most of our goals go, isn't it though?

How Does She Do It All?

If you're looking for a post on how to get everything done and have it all together all the time, keep looking.  This won't be it.  I'm just trying to hang onto my sanity most days.

Do you ever see those beautiful homes?  The ones that look like they belong in a magazine because they are carefully decorated, immaculately clean, and then of course photographed, Pinterest-ed, and blogged all over the web?  I just don't understand how they do it.

How does she do it all?!

I'm over here like "Let's have a folding party!" on a Friday night.  And by party I mean, let's dump all the clothes I managed to clean throughout the week out of their crumpled up piles inside laundry baskets onto the bed and hold our eyelids open while we fold them.  Then they get placed back into laundry baskets and sit folded until I find time to put them away. Am I the only one?

I do take great pride in the fact that I manage to clean the bedding and towels once a week.  The trick is to take it directly out of the dryer and put it back on the bed and hang it back on the rack.  No folding involved.  Huzzah!

So, most the time the house looks good.  It looks lived in, but it's presentable.  What about you?

Moments of the Week

The other day our neighbor came to visit and she made a comment that really resonated with me:

The days are long, but the years are short.

Change that to months or weeks even!  I cant' believe that CT is going to be 9 months old on Tuesday.  9 months!  

It's been a crazy short week after spending the weekend in VA Beach for Labor Day.  I'm thankful for a short week, but boy did I pack a whole lot of stuff into these 4 workdays.

Carson just started sitting with his right foot up on top of the high chair all of a sudden while he eats.  I guess someone should start teaching him some manners...

I just realized absolutely none of these pictures have anything to do with the business of the week - they are each a fantastically significant moment in our life.  I love that in all the chaos, this is what I will remember most.

Oh hey.  Remember that time I had a well written post published each and every day?

Yeah.  I'm floundering.  Being a wife and mom, the new school year, and my new BeachBody business have taken my time and I'm not quite sure where it's gone!

I promise to get back on top of things just as soon as I'm in my routine.
