I decided to do the 3 Day Refresh after the craziness of holidays died down and the big 3-0 passed. So many people were asking me about it and it is on special for the month of January. I just felt like I needed to experience it myself rather than share other people's testimonies, so I figured after all the Christmas cookies, broccoli cheese casserole, and birthday cake was consumed what better time?!
There's a few things you should know about me first:
- I have a hard time promoting a product I don't have experience with. I had my coach's testimonies to share, but I really wanted my own to share with potential challengers.
- I love food. Eating is one of the main events my husband and I schedule our vacations around. So giving up food for any type of cleanse just isn't going to happen for this girl.
- Being hungry quickly makes me hangry.
- I had plenty of excuses not to do this; I almost quit once or twice. I'm just like you.
I started the day with my normal Shakeology so even I had myself convinced, "No big deal," in the beginning. It wasn't until that mid-morning Fiber Sweep that I really figured out what the difference was going to be the next 3 days.
Just the name scared me: I worried I would take residence in the bathroom the rest of the day. (I didn't in case you're wondering - in fact the entire 3 days was surprisingly gentle on my digestive system.)
It was not nearly as bad as I had feared. It tasted a lot like Lipton iced tea that wasn't completely mixed.
Lunch was good and surprisingly (lots of surprise this first day) very filling. I was worried when I saw the tiny portions on my tiny plate. But, the Vanilla Refresh Shake was very tasty (I added half my strawberries to my first one) and really helped satisfy my hunger.
I had a mid-afternoon snack of half an avocado and it made waiting for dinner easy. Don't skip this!
For dinner, I ate a large serving of roasted cabbage with slivered almonds. It was pretty amazing. In fact, my husband said, "This is actually really good. I could eat this again." There's your proof.
I attempted to do the PiYo Drench workout that night. This is when I really started to feel the affect of having no carbs in my system. I made it about 30 minutes into the workout before I had to just sit and watch Chalene do her thing for the rest. My energy levels just weren't where they needed to be.
Day 2 I woke up feeling a little tired - no more than usual. I wasn't looking forward to working all day while doing the cleanse, but internally I was feeling so good that I just knew it was going to be worth it.
I had my Shakeology and some strawberries for breakfast and headed out the door like any other day.
Due to scheduling, I wasn't able to leave my room to drink my Fiber Sweep because I had students during that time. So, I put the water and mix in my blender cup while they were taking a 3 minute comprehension assessment. All was fine and well until the timer went off, I needed to collect papers, and the Fiber Sweep was only half down.
**Do not let the Fiber Sweep sit out!!** Not even for 30 seconds. If I thought it was a strange texture on Day 1, Day 2 just about did me in. At one point I honestly thought, "What will my kids do if I throw up in front of them?"
I realize I'm making this sound awful. It's not. I mean, it's not yummy, but it's not awful.
Lunch this day was. so. good! Seriously, I looked forward to it all morning (not because I was hungry; I was just excited). Lunch was a huge serving of strawberries (12!) and half an avocado with hot sauce (not sure if that's on the plan) and fresh lime juice, and 5 baby carrots. Again, I was completely satisfied after drinking my Vanilla Fresh shake.
By mid-afternoon I wasn't hungry, but I knew I wouldn't make it to dinner if I didn't eat something so I peeled the orange I brought to work only to find it was moldy. Unfortunately, I didn't plan for this and ended up with no mid-afternoon snack.
That's what did me in on Day 2.
By 5:00 I was ravishing. I texted my coach saying I was thinking of sabotaging and eating all the bagelseggowafflesscrambledeggsmeatloaf in the house. Yeah, it got weird. She talked me down (which is exactly why I love Beachbody and what makes it so different from other products on the market) and told me to eat some fruit and prepare dinner.
I listened. And I'm so glad I did.
I didn't even attempt a workout this day. I knew I wasn't going to have the energy so I went to bed early and let it pass.
Day 3 I woke up soooo glad that I had not abandoned the program. I had a ton of energy and was ready to drink my last Fiber Sweep.
Unfortunately, because I had been so tired the night before I had not prepped my meals as well for Day 3 as I had the other 2 which did cause some problems. But, I threw everything I needed in my lunch tote and off to work I went. (I made sure to bring extra fruit this time just in case I wasn't able to eat something - I definitely didn't want to go hungry again.)
Breakfast was the typical chocolate Shakeology with a splash of coconut extract so that was easy.
I'm not gonna lie, the best part of Day 3 was definitely drink the last Fiber Sweep. In my eyes, it was quite the accomplishment!
For lunch I had blueberries and leftover cucumber tomato salad with half an avocado. My mid-afternoon snack was 5 baby carrots, 2 Tbsp hummus, and a banana.
That evening I got my hair cut and went grocery shopping; I got home rather late so dinner was poorly planned again on my part. I ended up eating half a cucumber with some kosher salt and a handful of raw almonds with my Vanilla Fresh shake. Surprisingly it was plenty and I went to bed feeling very proud of the fact that not once even in my moments of weakness and poor planning did I give up.
I woke up feeling amazing. Lighter, less bloated, and ready to take on the world. I made sure to eat breakfast before I attempted a workout and was so excited to pull out my mat and do my Upper Body PiYo dvd.
I was shocked when I saw my before and after pictures. I honestly didn't see the results of the 3 days until I looked at this. I ended up losing 2 pounds and 1.5 inches in my waist! Unbelievable.
Some things I learned from the Refresh:
- I think my biggest take away is the need to drink more water.
- I will start my day by drinking an 8 oz. glass of water every day from now on. This made a tremendous difference in how I felt throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
- Food can play tricks on your mind. I realized that I think about food way. too. much.
- Healthy food is filling.
- Honestly, this wasn't easy, but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I thought I was going to be starving all 3 days. I wasn't. I worried I would have to gag the shakes down. I didn't. I know I make the Fiber Sweep sound awful and although it's not great, it's bearable.
Will I do it again? Maybe; if I ever get so off track that I need to, yes.
Do I think this is a great way to kickstart your weight loss? Absolutely. Hands down, yes.
