Beach Weekend

We spent Memorial Day weekend in Atlantic Beach.  We're blessed that my in-laws have a time share they share with us pretty much as often as we like.  

After our quick trip to Virginia beach 2 weekends ago for my BFFs baby shower and seeing Carson plop down in the water fully clothed, I was really excited to play in the ocean with him this weekend. 

There was lots of castle building, hole digging, seashell throwing, and wave jumping.  Carson is at the perfect age for beach fun and he looooves the water.

On Saturday we spent the entire day by the water - CT took a little rest to reenergize!

I tried to stay active (chasing a toddler around the waves counts, right?), but I have to admit I let it slip in the workout department this week.  Rather than doing my dvds, we went for long evenings walks on the beach.

It's okay though!  I decided the memory was better than abs.  :)

{{Toddler Approved}} Whole Wheat Banana Oat Muffins

In this house we consume a lot of bananas.  Carson loves half a banana with his breakfast and I usually put the other half in my morning shake.  Lately I've become pretty addicted to chocolate covered cherry shakes so I haven't been using our bananas up.

I'm of the waste not want not mentality so throwing away half a banana or letting them turn brown and discarding them just won't work for me.  Carson loves muffins, waffles, pancakes, you know...the stuff that's good for you.  (Not)

So, I decided to take the ripe bananas and create a healthy muffin for my little guy to have in the mornings.  They're also a great alternative to a cookie after dinner.  He loves them and they aren't terribly awful for him.  Winning!

To make you just need:

  • 2 mashed ripe bananas
  • 2 Tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c whole milk 
  • 3/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2/3 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 c. quick-cooking oats
  • 1/4 honey
  • 1 3/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • coconut oil spray
  1. Preheat oven to 375.
  2. Combine first 5 ingredients in medium bowl.  Mix well and set aside.
  3. Whisk together last 6 ingredients in separate bowl.
  4. Combine mixtures together.
  5. Spray 12 muffin cups with coconut oil and fill with batter.
  6. Bake 16 minutes.

People Like Me

Have you ever looked at someone and thought, "Man, I wish I was like that."

It's natural to look at others and think they've got it all together or they have a perfect home or they're family is beautiful or all the other things we think or compare while scrolling through social media.  Have you noticed most of us don't share the not-so-great stuff on there?!  There's a reason for it.

So recently I had someone say to me, "I hate girls like you that just drop the baby weight and look better after baby than you did before."

Hold up.  Whaaaaattt?!

Obviously the answer is no.

I have kept no secret that losing the baby weight was really hard for me.  I wasn't in the best shape ever before getting pregnant and despite all my efforts to exercise and eat right during those 9 months, getting back into my routine was no easy task after Carson was born.  In fact, it was downright painful.

All those excuses people use to avoid exercise - I lived them.  So when someone comments on how I had it easy or the weight just came off or I'm skinnier than I was before I want to throw up.

Seriously.  I want to scream and yell and claim the efforts I've made to get where I am today.  Because if anyone had it easy in all this, it wasn't me.  This has been a challenge and it is one that I have set my heart and mind to do each and every day regardless of if/when there is another baby and another pregnancy.  I'm going to maintain this lifestyle.  I am.

It's not fair to discredit all the hard work I've put in to get where I am today.  Truth is, I didn't walk out of the hospital looking like a million bucks and I definitely wasn't wearing my regular jeans a few weeks after giving birth.

So people like me work hard to take care of the body they've been given.  They treat it like a temple.  They do whatever it takes to make sure it can do everything it needs to do.  They are dedicated and when they fall off the wagon, they pick themselves up, they brush themselves off, and they jump back on it.  That's what people like me do.  That's how we get results.

I guess the moral of the story is: this could be you.  You could be people like me if you really wanted to.  It takes about 25-30 minutes a day and eating healthy.  I'm not saying I never eat cake or chocolate; I do!  But, I rarely miss a workout (I have my days) and I try not to eat cake or chocolate every day. (Easier said than done)

Hello Fresh Review

I was blessed with the opportunity to try Hello Fresh services recently.  I have to admit I have always been hesitant about companies like this because 1. how does the food sit out on my stoop all day and not spoil? 2. what if I'm going out of town one week? 3. cost?

So, when I was given the opportunity to try it for free I jumped at it!  (Thank you, Maura!)  Anything that makes meal planning and momlife easier is an A+ in my book!

The package arrived one day while I was at work.  Since CT spends each afternoon in his swimming pool on our back deck, I took the opportunity to look everything over and get myself organized while he was playing outside.  I was very excited to find that everything is already organized!  The food comes with great recipe cards that are easy to follow and it's bagged by meal so there is no confusing herbs or ingredients.

The first night I made the apricot-glazed chicken with couscous and greens.  Ah-mazing.  We loved it.  And it was something I would have never picked out of a recipe book to try so I'm really glad it encouraged me to step outside the norm.

I was a little intimidated by the name because it sounds so fancy!  But, it was easy to follow the recipe and didn't take longer than most recipes.

The next night was meatloaf, roasted potatoes, and carrots.  It was the first night in a long time I can remember Carson actually sitting at the table and eating what we were eating!  I will definitely be making more roasted veggies in our future because he gobbled them up.

So much so that he had leftover meatloaf for dinner the next night!  And we ate it all up before I remembered to take a picture the first night.

The last night was our favorite.  Since doing the 21 Day Fix Extreme, I've been wanting to try cod because it's on the meal plan and I never bought it to prepare.  Hello Fresh sent us cod!  I was so excited to try this meal and it is something we will be duplicating in the future.

All in all I was really pleased with the selection, ease, and time saver this service is.  I'm not sure it's something I will do on a weekly basis since we tend to buy in bulk and I coupon to save money on groceries, but it's definitely something I will consider in the future for times when we have company coming into town or things are going to be really busy.

I thought I would miss going to the  grocery store (I'm one of the crazies that enjoys it), but I definitely didn't!

The Skinny "Compliment"

Ugh.  The other day a former student commented, "You had a baby...but you're really skinny now!"

I cringed.

I know he meant it as a compliment and I tried really hard to smile and take it as one, but whenever someone says that to me I. just. cringe.

All my life I was small - I never had to worry about what I was eating.  In fact, the biggest concern was whether or not the store my mom and I were shopping in would have something small enough to fit me.  People would call me "skinny minnie" or "string bean."

And those people weren't being mean to me.  They were terms of endearment, but I heard insults every single time.  I felt ridiculed for being thin.

I didn't want to be thin.  I wanted to be strong.  And today, I don't want to be thin.  I don't want to be a size 0.  I don't want to look like I walked off the runway.

And after having my son it was a constant uphill battle to lose the baby weight.  Those pesky pounds would not leave me!  I suddenly could no longer eat whatever I wanted and when I was shopping it was hit or miss with the way things fit.

I want to be fit, strong, toned, tight.  I want a booty.  I want to be called "quadzilla" or "strongmom."

So I cringed.

I'm a role model for young girls.  I'm a mom.  I am an example.  And although I am by no means perfect, I am trying to be the best role model/mom/example I can be and being "skinny" isn't in my credentials.  Nor do I want it to be.

We are way too focused on being thin and body shaming and defining ourselves by the size hanging in our closet which is probably filled with clothing even though we have nothing to wear.  Right?!

I don't want people to look at me and think: skinny/thin/tiny/ I want people to look at me and think: determined/strong/fit/capable/motivated/disciplined/driven.

The things I want people to recognize aren't even physical traits.  I want people to look deeper.  I want them to see what's important to me.  And being skinny is not important to me.

Super Saturday

A few weeks ago I went to my first Beachbody LIVE event, Super Saturday.  It's a quarterly event where local coaches come together to network, motivate, inspire, and connect with one another.

One of my favorite things about being a Beachbody coach is the community that comes with it.  Pretty much, it's everything you want in a group of best friends, but it's a business!  So your entire team is like a sorority of your very best BFFs constantly encouraging you, celebrating with you, and making you strive to be better.

Super Saturday was pretty super.

We started the morning off with a photo booth (we dressed up western since we are headed to Nashville for Summit this summer) and some snacks.  Then we heard people share their amazing transformation stories through their Beachbody experience.

The thing I love about these stories is that it's more than a physical transformation. Yes, it is very easy to see the physical changes these people went through as they stand at the front of the room holding out the pants they no longer fit into or sharing a before/after image on the screen.  But, the real transformation is when they start to share the deeper story.

The story about the twice-divorced mother of 2 who was an addict before she took this leap to better herself and truly find herself.  The story about the woman who decided to follow her dream after her 2 grown songs left home, eventually closing her salon because Beachbody has provided such a financial stability in her life there is no reason for her to work outside home anymore.  The story about the woman who had an eating disorder until she found Beachbody, learned to be healthy, and decided to help others do the same.

These are the stories that inspire me.  I realize I don't have to coach; it's not my only source of income.  But, I really am not doing it for the money - I love helping people do what's right for themselves and their family.  Nothing brings me greater joy than to celebrate in others' success.

Once we heard the transformation stories, some top local coaches shared a presentation on staying motivated and crushing goals.  We watched some film from corporate and got super excited about the upcoming Cize launch in July.

Then we changed into our workout clothes and got a good sweat on together.  This was my favorite part of the day.  I love working out at home; I love paying no monthly gym fee and sweating it out without leaving my house, but it's really fun to do that with a group of people.

I left Super Saturday feeling super charged.  See what I did there?

I am super excited (okay, I'll stop) for Nashville in July.  I've never been and I just know with the way this weekend left me that I'm going to come home 100% inspired and motivated to rock the world and help as many people reach their goals as possible.

The One We are Hardest On

There are things that I say to myself on a daily basis that I would never say to my friends.

Like never.

You know the T Swift song, Haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate...  Sometimes I'm my biggest hater!  Seriously!  I should be my biggest cheerleader!  But no, I'm the whisper in the back of my mind saying: You will fail.  You can't grow.  You will never accomplish your goal.

And it kills me.  It leaves me with this overwhelming sense of anxiety and defeat.  And I must stop.  

I guess it comes with the territory of setting your goals high and keeping things scary.  I'm always on edge with fingers crossed hoping/wishing/working to make the next thing happen.  And if I'm being honest, I love it.  I never would have thought I'd like this entrepreneurial lifestyle being the conservative chronic rule follower that I am.

I just have to learn to balance it all.  I need to realize that I've already accomplished a lot in just 9 months of coaching.  And my family's well being is not contingent on this.  It is something I love doing and, of course, I want to do it well.

As I've been working toward these goals and my business keeps building, I've realized the importance of surrounding yourself with positive energy.  There are days when I am my own biggest BULLY.

I'm so glad I found this community that I've found because I can't even begin to describe the overwhelming sense of: "it's all going to be okay" that it gives me!  And I need that.  I know me well enough by now to know that I need that sense of okay-ness in order to be okay.

I know me well enough to know that I'm going to get down and defeated about once a month; I can typically plot it out on the calendar when it will happen.  Ladies, you know.  But, I also know it's going to pass.  I just wish I could figure out a way to handle the meanness that I show myself in a more positive manner.

So, let's make a pact to be nicer to ourselves, shall we?  We deserve more cheerleaders in our lives.

Gifts for Every Mom

I love holidays like Mother's Day.  It's just a great day to really thank and show appreciation for all the things moms do that go unnoticed.  I like that it's a day when not everyone gets a gift.

Just moms.  Just the ones that carry you around for 9 months {mostly} without complaint.  The ones that stay up late making sure your uniform is dry and wake up early to spread cream cheese on your bagel in the mornings.  The ones that do laundry 24/7 and chauffeur you and your friends around.

There are lots of different kinds of moms out there.  I think it's important on Mother's Day especially to acknowledge the things about your mom that define her other than motherhood.  The hobbies they enjoy doing when they aren't doing all the mom things.  The things they are passionate about above and beyond their families.

Dressing for Nashville

I'm heading to Nashville in July for Beachbody Summit and I am so excited!  I've never been to Nashville before and it just seems like such a fun little country city.  Not to mention, I've been to 2 live events with Beachbody since I started coaching and they have been hands-down AH-mazing!

I'm trying to think about what I should pack and *more importantly* what I need to buy for my trip!  I already have cowboy boots so now it's just a matter of finding some cute things to wear with them.  As a mama, my wardrobe is pretty kid-friendly and the clothing/fabrics I have aren't exactly nightwear.  If you know what I mean?

So, I'm on a mission to find some cute lace shorts (these are super cute), a few dressier tanks, and some black wedges.  I picked up this romper at Target the other day, but didn't take the time to try it on so I hope it works!

What I Love About Being a Mom

There's my whole world right there.  Right in one picture.  Our little family takes up every bit of my heart space.  Sometimes to the point where I think it could burst.

I love so many things about being a mom.  I love knowing this gift was given to me and selected for me and everything in every moment in time is perfect because of it.  Even when things don't feel or seem perfect...they are.

I love that this little creature; this little man has given me the ability to see the world through different eyes.  More curious, less judgmental eyes.

I love that being a mom makes me somehow more important in this world.  Maybe not to anyone, but the people in this picture.  But it definitely makes me feel more important.

I love that this little man has given me a passion to do the things I've always been too scared to do.  The things that make me who I am and define our family.

I love that being a mom means I get to kiss the boo boos, wipe the tears, rock the baby, clean the nose.  I love the hugs, the kisses, the giggles, the smiles, every single last one of them.

I love that being a mom means I put myself on the back burner.  It means my time, energy, money, and attention gets practically all used up before 8:00 at night.  It means this little guy is a sponge soaking up every last bit of it.  And I love it that way.

Being a mom is the best, most exhausting, most special gift I've ever been given.  I'm so grateful this little man came into our lives and decided to make me MOM.
