Motivation vs. Commitment

For the past 2.5 years I've thought I could be the missing piece.  I thought I could want it enough for you, I could cheer louder than anyone else, I could push you and pull you and make your goals happen just by simply motivating you.

Truth is, I can't even motivate myself some days.  Shocker!!

For real though - some days when that alarm goes off I don't even want to think about getting out of bed and working out.  And there is no motivational quote on Pinterest that is going to make me change my mind.  At least not for long...

See, motivational quotes are great.  In the moment, they get us pumped, they get us excited, they get us moving.  But, a day or two later they are forgotten.

So although motivation can get us STARTED, it cannot keep us going.

That's where commitment comes in.  Life is like a marriage.  It's going to get hard, it's going to get ugly, there are going to be days when you love it but you might not like it.  However, you don't throw in the towel and say GAME OVER, right?!  You figure out a way to stay committed and make it work.  That's what we do when things get hard.

Although, I can't help you stay committed, I can share some tricks that I've put into place that really help me to stay committed along my journey:

  1. Share!  Share what you are doing - you can share it with your significant other, your mother, your Facebook friends, whoever.  Just sharing it makes you more accountable.
  2. No excuses - just do it.  I realize this sounds cliche, but it's reality.  You just have to get out of bed even on the days you don't want to.  You just have to push play even when you're sore.  You just have to DO IT and get over it.  It's never as bad as you think it is.
  3. Set mini-milestone goals for yourself.  What is your long term goal?  It may take a while so, instead, focus on some smaller short-term goals along the way.
You can get motivated, it's staying motivated that's tough.

What are your tricks to staying committed?
